Wines To Keep You Warm And Fuzzy

Ever wondered what the best wines were to go with the food that helps keep you warm? Even during Summer, a brisk rainstorm can bring about a sudden chill to the air. And we all know Winter can be a chilling experience. For this article, how to keep warm is the question at large. Inquiring minds want to know. Well, the answer may vary from person to person, but the following wines may help dispel that unpleasant chill that seeps through our bones and minds. Read on.

With the change of seasons comes an alteration in what we eat and drink as well. In colder times, most of us seek heartier foods like stews, heavy soups and pastas to stoke our body temperatures and placate our yins and yangs. The perfect wine for any season is not decided so much by its characteristics, but rather by how well those characteristics match the foods associated with the particular time of year.

According to Steve Fox of Richmond Publication, the wines of Northern and Central Italy offer many fine choices for the season. Soave from the Veneto, Tuscany's Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Gavi from the Piemonte are whites that go perfectly with stews and roasts and such.

At one time, these wines, which are made from ancient grape varieties, were available only from one major supplier, Mastroberadino, and were very expensive. Although Mastroberadino remains the region's major supplier, other producers have developed less expensive and equally delicious facsimiles. These include The Greco di Tufu Serapis 2000 by Montesole and The Flano di Avellino 2000 by Marianna, both of which sell for about $15.00. Both of these wines are dry and crisp, the former delivering a flavor of apple and almond, and the latter one of pears and hazelnut.

If you prefer red wines, especially while eating poultry, rabbit or tomato-tart dishes, Barberas and Chiantis have good acidity and are excellent choices. Fruity, spicy Zinfandel (The Burton Napa Valley 2000, which costs about $18 bucks) also ranks high as a companion to most red meat selections.

So sit by the fire and relax with a glass of your favorite wine. Look out the window and feel sorry for anyone still out there struggling through the wet and cold. Whether you prefer white or red, remember that the important thing is to stay warm. Like the words of that old song, "baby, it's cold outside!"

Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon

There has been much hype in the press about the 2001 California vintage in regards to the Cabernet crop and they are absolutely correct to be as excited as they are. Predicted by some to be the best vintage on record from Northern California, Merryvale has given us two offerings that fit the bill. The 2001 Merryvale Cabernet sauvignon "Vineyard X" is a huge and powerful wine. Loads of lucious fruit and perfectly integrated tannins and oak along with its 30+ second finish will make it hard for anyone to keep the corks in these bottles. This is a 20 year wine and needs a couple more years of cellaring to help the wine open up! (Subject to Availability) MCVX01 MCVX01

Hmm, an Italian varietal with Indian food? Sure. That's because Sangiovese is among the world's more food versatile wines. This dish calls for a robust and higher-acid red wine - and Round Peak delivers. This winery near Mt. Airy produces two tiers of Sangiovese and this one is their reserve bottling. I love Round Peak's 2007 Sangiovese, but the 2006 Reserve is a bit more full-bodied and ...

History of Wine

Mon, 22 Dec 2008 18:46:14 -0800
People acquired a preference for grapes as the basic ingredient for wine very early on, although on some African societies dates, bananas and the sap of palm tree were sometimes used, and indeed they sometimes still are.

Cabinet Solutions for Preserving Wine

Specialized storage cabinets offer a unique method for preserving those special vintages. Simply put, you no longer have to buy big, bulk independent storage units.

Cabinet Solutions for Preserving Wine

An investment in a wine collection is no small thing. Individual bottles of wine can cost thousands of dollars. If you have a large collection, you may have spent tens of thousands of dollars stocking your favorite varieties and vintages. With an investment like wine, the worth of your collection has the potential to keep growing - but only if you store your wine in a proper way. Wine cabinets are an excellent way to make sure that your wine collection matures correctly.

There are several factors that you should look at when choosing among the many wine cabinets available. Most homeowners and wine enthusiasts today don't have the ability to create their own wine cellar in a basement or other cool, moist place - but this is the ideal environment for aging wine, known as crianza. To that end, wine owners should look for cabinets that replicate this type of environment as closely as possible.

A good wine cabinet will allow you to store your wines at an ideal temperature, which is between 59 and 61 degrees F. If your wine is kept too chilled or too warm, it will not age and mature properly. Good wine cabinets will also allow you to have a controlled amount of moisture in the air - an optimum amount of moisture allows the wine to mature, and this amount has been calculated to be about 70 percent humidity.

Some wine cabinets allow for the first two conditions to be met without issue - most wine cabinet manufacturers install thermostats as well as humidity controls so that you can make sure your wine is getting the right atmosphere. These aren't the only considerations, however, that you should make when choosing a cabinet. It's also a good idea to choose a wine storage system that allows your bottles to stay stable with little to no vibration to disturb the sediment in the wine. The natural way that wine ages is usually in a still place, and the vibrations from compressors found in some cabinets can disturb the wine.

Choosing the right storage method for your wine investment is nearly as important as choosing the correct vintages to purchase. Wine that is aging is considered by some to be a living thing, and because of this, it needs the utmost care.

A useful weekend

Pottering weekends are ideal for playing in the kitchen. A tray of roasted tomatoes makes good seasonal sense right now, for adding to nearly anything you can imagine, as does a jar or two of pesto. Relishes, condiments, accompaniments. I’m rather fond of the delightfully old fashioned word tracklement. Said aloud, working your ear around those first syllables, it’s a beauty. Tracklements, condiments, call them what you will, they are the pepper and salt that make cooking, and indeed eating, e

Wine Tastings - The Mystery Revealed

Have you have ever wondered why people at wine tastings go through a form of ritual of tilting their glass, swirling the wine around the bowl, sniffing the wine and apparently gargling with the wine before eventually spitting it out? If you have, then this whole process is not really such a mystery and quite simply represents the five steps that are necessary to assess quality of a wine.

Let's look at each of these five steps to see just how simple the process really is.

Testing the color and clarity of a wine. In the case of red wines the glass should be tilted and then viewed against a white background. If you look at the edge, or lip, of the wine against the glass and see a dark color that runs clear to the edge then this indicates a very young wine. A slightly lighter color that tends to hold to the center of the glass with a wide clear lip is indicative of an older wine.

For white wines the clarity is assessed by looking straight down into the wine. The greater the clarity, the more the wine will appear to sparkle, rather like diamonds.

Testing the body of a wine. Swirl the wine vigorously around the glass and then observe the wine on the bowl of the glass once the glass is held still. In some cases the wine will appear to adhere to the bowl of glass while in other cases there will be little if any sign of the wine on the bowl at all. The more a wine adheres to the sides of the glass, the greater its body.

Testing the aroma of a wine. Swirl the wine in your glass to release its vapours and then sniff deeply. Assessing the resultant smell is something of an art that takes time to perfect but, in general, a young red wine will smell heavily of berries and will sometimes also smell sightly of mint, spice, liquorice, or chocolate. As a red wine ages it will smell more of raisons or prunes and, finally, when it is past its best, it will take on the aroma of vinegar. White wines follow a similar pattern.

Testing a wine's sweetness, acidity and tannin. Take a small amount of wine into your mouth and start by rolling it around on your tongue. Then, hold the wine in the center of the tongue and gargle by slowly sucking in air to vaporize the wine and release its flavor.

A sweet wine will cause a tingling at the tip of the tongue, while an acid wine will produce a sensation of pins and needles on the sides of the tongue. A wine that is high in tannin will create a feeling of dryness throughout the mouth.

Young red wines tend to contain a lot of tannin which acts as a natural preservative and is the reason why most red wines can be stored for much longer than white wines.

Testing the concentration and aftertaste of a wine. The finest red wines have a deep fruit concentration which is experienced just before you swallow. For this reason you should always swallow a little of the wine at wine tastings. The best wines will display a lingering, pleasant finish.

As with many things in life wine tastings can appear to be something of a mysterious ritual art but, behind all the show, is a quite simple process that most of us can master along with the so-called connoisseurs.
